Basement Dehumidifiers and Humidity from the Drain

Basement Dehumidifiers and Humidity from the Drain

Any magic to connect dehumidifier to sump? Hey guys – Didn’t find an answer in a quick forum search for “sump. With all the rain we’ve had on the east coast in the last month, my basement is starting to smell a bit musty and wife has requested a dehumidifier. I remember my dad lugging the drainage bucket out of our dehumidifier before work every day and it looked like a pain in the ass. My dehumidifier will be on the same level as the sump basin and pump. I understand I’ll either need to raise the sump for a gravity drain or attach a condensate pump to move the water to the sump basin. I’m comfortable with that. My question is what is the best way to connect the dehumidifier drain hose to the sump basin and are there any no-nos? My sump basin cover has three ports already — a 2. Do I just drill a third port for the dehumidifier drain?

There can be many reasons why a dehumidifier is leaking water onto the floor but whatever the cause it is a frustrating, and potentially hazardous, situation. Dehumidifiers come in all different shapes, sizes and configurations. While you can buy desiccant dehumidifiers which work by using a moisture-absorbing substance like silica gel, the ones this review will be focusing on are mechanical. Options Dehumidifiers with pumps come in both permanent and portable. The permanent units need to be mounted onto a wall more on this later but the portable dehumidifiers can be moved from room to room and stored away when not in use.

A fixed unit without a pump relies on gravity for the water to flow from the unit, down the hose and into a drain. This means in order for it to work efficiently it needs to be mounted in an elevated position. Similarly, portable units may need to be lifted, for example on a workbench or table, so the water drains away. With a pump, you have the flexibility to put your dehumidifier in a place which is convenient or out of sight while also knowing the water can be drained away properly.

By Gene Austin Saturday, March 6, I want to keep my basement dry with a dehumidifier but am sometimes away from the house for extended periods and can’t empty a dehumidifier every day. If you own a dehumidifier and have a basement drain, you should be able to equip the dehumidifier with a hose that will flow into the drain instead of into a tray or tank.

Just make sure that the drain is open and in working order. The owner’s manual for the dehumidifier should have instructions for converting it. If you don’t have a basement drain, you can buy an add-on pump for the dehumidifier so that the water it collects can be pumped into a basement sink or even outside. If the water is pumped outside, the best bet is to drill a hole in the basement wall for the drain hose and run the hose to an appropriate drainage spot.

Drill the hole as high as possible in the wall and seal around the exit hole, inside and out, with epoxy putty or caulk. Some dehumidifiers come with a pump, while others allow for an add-on pump kit.

The Frigidaire is more convenient as well and quieter; there is nothing that I have noticed in operation for over a week now that conflicts with the product description.

While dehumidifiers are fairly simple in construction, there are some facts you need to familiarize yourself with. I am happy to bring those things to your attention as you begin to consider which basic and special features will be best for your needs. Two Different Types of Dehumidifiers Before we get too far into this discussion, I want to make sure that you know one very important point: These two kinds of dehumidifiers work in two very different ways and will affect your experience working with your unit.

However, since the information about these differences is a little technical and takes some time to explain, I have chosen to discuss it on a different page. You can read more about the differences between refrigerant-type and desiccant-type dehumidifiers by clicking here. Dehumidifiers capable of collecting 70 pints of water are suitable for homes and medium-sized basements. Finally, there are units capable of collecting pints of fluid or more, which are designed for use in basements and crawl spaces.

It is extremely important that you select a dehumidifier which will properly service your room. One which is too large will use more electricity than is necessary, take up more space than necessary, and could even pull too much moisture out of the air.

When you pick up the can, you might notice that it’s wet — there’s moisture on the outside. As air loses heat, it also begins to lose its ability to retain moisture; the colder surface pulls and collects water from the warmer air, creating condensation. Your dehumidifier does pretty much the same thing. Most dehumidifiers can be broken down into five component parts: Fan Compressor — This compresses and expands a refrigerant gas like freon to cool the dehumidifier’s coils.

Jun 25,  · Remove drain cap on dehumidifier, run hose from there to inlet on pump. Run hose from outlet on pump to utility sink or wherever you’re draining to. Problem with that setup is that if your pump fails, the reservoir overflows, and condensate from dehumidifier drains to floor.

Dehumidifiers collect a large amount of moisture that must be discarded. Most models come with a collection bucket that must be manually emptied before the unit will operate again. Draining a dehumidifier through a hose is a practical option for continuous appliance use. Do not attempt to work on the appliance with power attached. You could accidentally electrocute yourself. Since use of this outlet is optionalal, it is commonly covered with a rubber plug. Pull the plug out of the outlet and place it aside in a safe place.

Carefully snake the hose through the appliance until it appears on the exposed front side. Depending on the dehumidifier’s manufacturer, the hose should either click or twist on. Consult the owner’s manual for specific attachment information.

How To Drain a Dehumidifier Through a Hose

For the health of your home, you have to be keen about the level of humidity in the air. While a little humidity is fine, high levels of humidity can result in big problems. Dehumidifiers are helpful household appliances which help in the maintenance of preferable and healthy humidity levels. Their main job is to cleanse the air and to get rid of excess moisture preventing bacteria, mold, and other organisms from growing.

Sensitive or not, you need a dehumidifier when you see the following: The room feels unpleasantly stuffy.

This project shows how to install a basement dehumidifier and drain the condensate water to the outdoors for continuous operation. A dehumidifier extracts moisture from the air and is a great way to lower the humidity in a basement.

Furthermore, the chart makes the following definitions: Damp spots show on walls and floor. Walls or floor sweat, or seepage is present. Unlike most other consumer publications, we do not recommend that you use the chart above to help you decide what capacity dehumidifier to buy. Why do we disagree with the use of this chart? See the 8 reasons below. The chart can be found at the bottom of this PDF file.
